Yoho Breaks Six Records in WAC Meet

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State swimmers and divers concluded the 2011 WAC Championship Meet today in San Antonio, Texas today breaking three more Fresno State records and finishing in seventh-place.
"We had a great night again," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "Heidi (Gjoen) broke the 200 back, Dani (Yoho) broke the 400 free and our relay team also broke the Fresno State record. On top of that we scored in every event tonight."
Yoho shattered the Fresno State record in the 100-yard freestyle race. She placed fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 50.20 and also placed fourth in the finals. She broke the previous record by 1.09 seconds that was set in the 2003-04 season.
Yoho was also the last leg of the record breaking 400-yard freestyle relay team. Yoho along with teammates Gjoen, Kat Vietti and Stephanie Hatayama clocked a record-breaking time of 3:25.68. They replaced the record set in 1990-00, beating it by more than two seconds.
Individually Yoho broke the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races along with being a part of the 200- and 400-yard medley relays and 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. Total she was a part of six record-breaking races.
Heidi Gjoen broke the third record of the day in the 200-yard backstroke event. Gjoen placed fifth in the event with a time of 2:00.35. Breaking the previous Fresno State record she had set in the 2008-09 season by .30 second.
Michelle Dockendorf swam a 2:20.95 in the 200-yard breaststroke event and finished in 11th place. Dockendorf and Britney Vogel both qualified to swim in the finals of the race. Vogel improved her time and place in the final to clock a 2:21.99 with an 11th place finish.
Rayanne Nguyen had a tenth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly event with a time of 2:05.79. Lacey Payne and Cindy Engle both swam the 200 fly event. Payne improved her career-best in the event by almost two seconds with a time of 2:13.81.
Each of the three distance swimmers to participate in the 1650-yard freestyle race improved their career-best times dramatically. Jen Hicks led the way by improving her career-best in the to 17:21.90 for a 10th place finish and improvement of more than twenty seconds.
Brittany Buna swam the race in a time of 17:41.65. She improved her career-best by more than six seconds. Freshman Alexis Melnikov improved her best by more than 11 seconds with a time of 18:00.39.
The divers were strong in the final day of competition off the platform. All three divers dove to the water with great performances. Kendra Weeks led the way improving her preliminary dive to the finals with a score of 201.40 and a fifth place finish.
Freshman Hannah Prigge scored a 181.65 for a ninth place finish and sophomore Stacey Luke placed 12th with 174.05 points.
"We had a great weekend," said Fleck. "We swam amazingly and scored in every race but two which is great improvement. The upper classmen were stellar and on top of that it was a great learning experience for the younger athletes."
