FRESNO, Calif. - On yet another beautiful day in America's Finest City, the Bulldogs shot a seven-over to hold onto the fifth spot at the San Diego Intercollegiate played on the 7,033-yard, par-72 course at the San Diego Country Club.
"It was nice to see some very good rounds today," head coach Mike Watney said. "We had two very solid rounds. Unfortunately, if you have one bad day it can ruin the week."
Fresno State (365-381-367--1113, +33) entered the final day of the tournament with only one player, freshman Nate Jessup, in the top 20 but a strong finish by the Dogs moved the total up to three.
Jessup (71-76-74--221), a native of Porterville, Calif., started the final round in a group which included No. 71 Alex Kang of San Diego State and outshot Kang by two strokes to jump him and others to end up in a tie for 14th at 5-over. He scattered 12 birdies throughout the three rounds which was the most of any Bulldog in the tournament.
The other top 20 performances came from juniors Brian Sunker and Bhavik Patel who tied for 17th and 20th, respectively. Sunker (73-77-72--222, +6) carded a 72 for his best round of the tournament. Patel (73-77-73--223, +7) closed out his final round with two birdies on the last five holes.
Senior Brad Wyatt tied his lowest round of the year with a final round 72, even-par. After sinking an eagle on Monday, Wyatt (78-76-72--226, +10) fired in five birdies, two of which were on the final three holes. He jumped up eleven spots to tie fellow teammate Bryan Hogan for 31st. Hogan (75-75-76--226, +10) also knocked in five birdies on the day. Michael Gideon (73-77-78--228, +12) finished a few spots behind in a tie for 36th place.
SMU and Texas-Arlington ended tied for the top spot at 13-over but was broken by a card-off. The lowest score of each team's No. 6 golfer from the final round would determine the winner. Aaron Stewart's 73 beat out Brad Lyle's 77 to give SMU the win.
Paul McConnell (72-72-70--214) of Texas-Arlington claimed the individual title after shooting a 2-under to hold off SMU's Kelly Kraft (70-69-76--215, -1).
The Bulldogs get a much deserved week off before they compete in the OGIO Santa Barbara Intercollegiate March 28-29.
"We Are Your Team!" Fresno State men's golf return to action March 28-29 for the OGIO Santa Barbara Intercollegiate held at Sandpiper Golf Course.
