SAN DIEGO - On a morning that began with Central Valley-esque fog that engulfed the San Diego's Montezuma Mesa, No. 23 Fresno State dropped a 4-1 decision to the Big 12's Baylor Lady Bears in the Dogs' finale of the 21st Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic.
Baylor struck first with a run off starting Fresno State pitcher Michelle Moses in the top of the first.
Bulldog senior Haley Gilleland evened the game at 1-1 after she tagged and safely slid head first into home on Courtney Moore's sacrifice fly to shallow right field in the bottom half of the opening frame.
Moses then delivered three straight innings of scoreless ball before the Lady Bears added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a Clare Hosack two-run blast over the left field bleachers to push Baylor ahead to the final 4-1 tally.
Moses, a 2010 All-West Region honoree, earned her ninth start in the circle and fell to 3-2 on the year.
After sweeping the first day of action against Mountain West opponents BYU and San Diego State on Friday, the Bulldogs finished the Classic with a 2-3 record. Long Beach State secured the tournament title with a 4-1 mark in a field that also included No. 6 UCLA, No. 25 Houston and Cal Poly.
Fresno State will return to Bulldog Diamond on Thursday night at 7 p.m. for the Dogs' opening game of the 2011 Bayer CropScience Classsic against the Idaho State Bengals. The four-day tournament will run from Thursday through Sunday and close when No. 23 Fresno State hosts No. 11 California on Sunday at 2 p.m.
NOTES
No. 23 Fresno State moved to 8-4 on the season. The Bulldogs are 2-1 against Top 25 teams, including a pair of victories versus Top 20 teams (then-No. 8 Missouri and No. 19 Oklahoma State) and a one-run loss to No. 25/23 Houston.
The 21st Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic is named after Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, who lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program. To pay tribute to Campbell and Cartier, the Aztec softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability.
