Dogs Fall in Round One

FRESNO, Calif. - After a long trip to Waco, Texas, the Fresno State equestrian season has come to an end at the completion of the first round of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
The Bulldogs entered the National Championships ranked seventh in the Hunt Seat competition and 11th in the Western competition. The Hunt Seat ladies competed against No. 10 UTM in the first round and fell 5-3. Junior Kimberly Steinbuch was the only Bulldog to win her point on the Equitation on the Flat. Senior Holly Elsbernd defeated her opponent by seven points with a combined score of 159 from both judges. This was the highest score for the Bulldogs at the event. Freshman Hillary West also rode for the win in Equitation Over Fences earning a total score of 140.
The Western team took on No. 6 TCU and fell 6-1. Junior Shawna McClurg was the only Dog to earn a victory in this head to head match. She ended her run with a total score of 144 in the Reining event. Senior Jillian Tebbe tied her opponent with a score of 139.5. This was Tebbe's fourth and final time competing at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships during her collegiate career.
The second round of the event will begin this evening in Waco, Texas.

Western Competition

- No.2 Oklahoma State vs. No.7 Kansas State
"We Are Your Team!" Fresno State concluded its season at the 2011 VENC Championships on Thursday. The Bulldogs will hold their annual awards banquet on May 14, 2011 at Pardini's.
