Dogs Finish Season in First Round

FRESNO, Calif. - The 62nd- ranked Fresno State Bulldogs finished its 2010-11 season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Evanston, Ill. as the Dogs fell to the Fighting Irish, 4-0 Friday afternoon.
Notre Dame started the afternoon 1-0 over the Dogs earning the doubles point.
Fresno State freshman Marianne Jodoin pushed the No. 5 singles player in the country, Kristy Frilling, to a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6 (6) and earned the victory. But the match did not finish due to the Fighting Irish clinching the team match.
On court five, Olga Kirpicheva won the first set, 6-3 and battled in the second set but didn't have time to earn the second set when the team match was clinched.
Junior Laura Pola battled on court two against the No. 56 singles player Shannon Matthews pushing her to a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6 (7), unfortunately the match did not continue.
Notre Dame earned victories on courts three, four and six.
"I think our young team showed today they could compete with a strong top 20 team like Notre Dame," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "It was a positive season and we are already looking forward to next season."
The Fighting Irish advanced to the second round.
As a team, the Dogs have made incredible progress since day one, picking up a WAC Championship title and made their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the past 16 seasons.
Fresno State's Marianne Jodoin season will continue as the freshman will compete in the NCAA Singles Championships May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
