FRESNO, Calif. - In honor of Fresno State's centennial anniversary, Associated Students Inc. assembled items to place in a time capsule, which was buried Wednesday in Keat's Garden by the Memorial Fountain.
"We are so please with the wide range of items that were donated," Selena M. Farnesi, the ASI executive vice president, said. "We feel the time capsule truly reflects the great diversity, the many achievements, and the overwhelming pride of students and the entire campus community."
The purpose of the Centennial Time Capsule is to help preserve Fresno State's history with items that were donated by clubs, organizations and individuals associated with the university. A number of teams from the athletic department also participated by contributing memorabilia that contain significant meaning.
The newest Fresno State team, lacrosse, donated a signed ball because it shows school spirit and represents students through athletics. Volleyball added a signed official Bulldog volleyball to represent all the girls who competed for Fresno State in the centennial year.
Softball and baseball submitted a t-shirt created for Violence Awareness Day because it demonstrates how the athletic department works with other entities on campus to help raise awareness to sensitive issues students might be dealing with, like domestic abuse.
A foam finger was donated by women's basketball to represent the school spirit and student involvement at sporting events. Men's basketball added an "I heart #4" sign in support of sophomore Greg Smith, the Bulldogs' leading rebounder and second-leading scorer this past season.
Football contributed the "Like It" sign to demonstrate the team's campaign to connect students to student-athletes through Facebook. In relation to the football team, the Dan Brown Legacy Fund submitted a Dan Brown Legacy t-shirt. The Dan Brown Legacy Fund was created by head football coach Pat Hill and the family of the late Bulldog defensive coordinator Dan Brown. The fund was established to honor Dan's fight against brain cancer and to help support the work of the Central California Neuroscience Institute at Community Regional Medical Center.
The time capsule will be buried for 50 years and is scheduled to be opened in 2061.
