FRESNO, Calif. - As Bulldog student-athletes completed their academic year with final exams last week, the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released by the NCAA today showed Fresno State's student-athletes continue to perform well in their academic endeavors.
Fresno State's most recent APR multi-year score as a department has jumped to an all-time high of 975 out of 1000 points, up 30 points from three years ago. For the second straight year since the NCAA adopted the APR program, all of Fresno State's sports programs are meeting NCAA APR standards and none of the sports programs are under APR penalties.
Several programs have made significant improvements over the last three years, led by the men's basketball team which improved 107 points (816 to 923). The men's tennis team (893 to 976) and baseball program (893 to 976) have also made great strides.
There was improvement nearly across the board in the multi-year year rates as 15 of 18 Fresno State sports either surpassed or maintained last year's scores.
For the 2009-10 year, eight sports programs posted a perfect score of 1000 for one-year rates. Those sports were men's cross country, men's tennis, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track, women's outdoor track and volleyball.
Fresno State has set higher goals than the NCAA minimum standard score of 925 for the multi-year rates. Each sports program is expected to reach the NCAA average for public schools in each respective sport. This year 13 sports reached that goal, eight more than were at that benchmark a year ago. Those reaching department goals were: baseball, men's cross country, football, men's tennis, men's track & field, women's basketball, women's cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, women's tennis, women's indoor track & field and volleyball. Four other sports are within a few percentage points toward reaching the goal.
In all, 77 Bulldog student-athletes are on track to graduate either after the Fall Semester of 2010 or the Spring Semester of 2011.
"Our progress is a direct result of the coaches' commitment to academics, the SAS staff's hard work and dedication to our student-athletes, and the efforts of the student-athletes to get it done in the classroom," said Dr. Susan Gutkind, Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athletes Services. "We see them more and more being excited and proud about their academic accomplishments. That's when you know you've got the right kind of culture for success."
