FRESNO, Calif. - With its unwavering commitment to premier athletic competition and academic performance, Fresno State remained the top performing program throughout the nine years of the Western Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup after a strong second-place finish (89.50 points) in the 2010-11 standings.
The Bulldogs were powered by five conference team titles (baseball, women's basketball, soccer, and men's and women's tennis) and seven other squads (men's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and softball) also secured a spot in the top four in their respective standings.
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport and are averaged between a team's regular season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams.
This is the ninth year of the WAC Commissioner's Cup and the Bulldogs have finished in the top half of the standings in all nine seasons.
Since the 2002-03 academic year when the Cup race started, Fresno State has scored a WAC-best 769.0 points for an average of 85.44 points per academic year.
The Dogs rank first among the current WAC institutions with an average finish of 2.33, ahead of Boise State (3.33) and Nevada (4.00) as the top three WAC schools.
Fresno State will compete in its final season in the WAC during the 2011-12 academic year before moving to the Mountain West Conference in June 2012.
