Dogs Add Byrd to Roster

FRESNO, Calif. - Head coach Adrian Wiggins announced the addition of Ta'Nitra Byrd to the 2011-12 recruiting class. She is the second transfer to sign a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bulldogs.
Byrd, a native of Long Beach, Calif., will transfer to Fresno State after playing her freshman season at UNLV. She appeared in 31 games for the Rebels off the bench and averaged 13.5 minutes per game. Byrd averaged 5.1 points a game and recorded 23 steals.
"TaNitra is a very gifted athlete and fits perfectly within or system," said Wiggins. "She is going to be a fun player to watch grow here at Fresno State and we are very fortunate to have her join our program."
Byrd, a 6-0 forward, recorded 108 rebounds and averaged 3.5 rebounds a game. Byrd was a 77 percent free throw shooter during her freshman campaign making 45 of 58 from the free throw line.
Coming out of high school, Byrd was ranked as the No. 34 forward in the country by ESPN/Hoopgurlz. Byrd played high school basketball at Long Beach Poly, where former Bulldog Taja Edwards also played. She helped Long Beach Poly to the state championship as a junior, and to a runner-up finish her senior season.
Byrd spent her first two seasons of high school in Hawaii, playing for Radford High in Honolulu. She was named the Oahu Intercollegiate Association West Red Division Player of the Year as a freshman in 2006-07. Byrd was nominated to the Hawaii All-Star team and was a second team All-OIA selection her sophomore season.
Byrd will have to sit out the 2011-12 season to satisfy NCAA transfer requirements. Byrd rounds out the recruiting class for 2011-12, which also includes, transfer Rachael Pecota, Alex Sheedy, Robin Draper, Raven Fox, Saidah Allen and Madison Parish.
