32 DAYS UNTIL BULLDOG FOOTBALL:
FRESNO, Calif. - The start of the 2011 Fresno State football season is 32 days away, do you have your season tickets? The Dogs are piling on the fun this season at Bulldog Stadium and here are 10 reasons to grab your tickets before it's too late.
1. New Look of Fresno State: Bulldog Stadium got a makeover this past summer and FieldTurf was installed replacing the natural grass surface. The new FieldTurf will create a safe and consistent surface for Bulldog teams to compete and practice on. Also new to Fresno State this year is the uniforms. The new uniforms are set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
2. New Competition: Ole Miss rolls into town on Oct. 1 and is the first team from the SEC to visit Fresno. Ole Miss defeated the Dogs last season 55-38 in Mississippi. The Rebels finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 4-8. The Rebel return 45 lettermen and 16 starters, while losing 27 lettermen and 10 starters.
3. Rising Stars: The 2011 team is full of youthful and energetic players. After graduating a large senior class last season, the Dogs are reloaded with young talent. A.J. Johnson, Jalen Saunders, Isaiah Burse and Josh Harper are some of the young wide receivers heading into the season. Other new faces are running backs Milton Knox and Michael Harris. On the defensive side, Edward Dillihunt, Jeremiah Toma, L.J. Jones and Derron Smith all were impressive during spring practices.
4. Pre-game Festivities: One of the oldest traditions in football is tailgating. Come enjoy tailgating with your favorite food and friends. Bring your bar-be-que and picnic table out to one of multiple tailgate parking lots four hours before every home game. Bulldog Boulevard is a family fun event before every home game.
5. Old Rivalries: Fresno State's biggest football rivals head to Bulldog Stadium in 2011. Fresno State faces Boise State on Oct. 7 and San Jose State on Nov. 26. The Mountain West's Boise State continues the tradition for the Milk Jug Trophy in October. The Dogs are 4-9 against the Broncos. In late November, one of the Bulldogs' oldest rivals San Jose State comes to Fresno. The Dogs first faced off with the Spartans in 1921 and have an overall record of 39-33-3 against SJSU.
6. Last Chance: This year marks the last chance for the Dogs to claim the WAC title. In 2012, the Bulldogs head to the Mountain West Conference. The Dogs will face several opponents for the last time as conference foes. This season Louisiana Tech, San Jose State and Utah State travel to Bulldog Stadium all competing for the conference crown.
7. New Carr: The Bulldog offense is under new leadership this season as Derek Carr begins his career as the Dogs quarterback. Carr, the younger brother of former Bulldog David Carr, enters his third year with the program. He appeared in a few games as a freshman and redshirted during the 2010 season. Carr has a quick release, strong arm and the ability to run under pressure. The quarterback has three seasons of eligibility left.
8. Players to Watch: Many of the veterans on the 2011 squad have garnered national attention heading into the season. Senior kicker Kevin Goessling is on several preseason watch lists heading into his final season with the Dogs. He is an All-WAC selection, who kicked a game-winning 58-yard field goal against Utah State. Running back Robbie Rouse and defensive tackle Logan Harrell both had breakout seasons in 2010 and have been selected to preseason watch lists. Rouse became the first true sophomore to rush for over a 1,000 yards. Last season, Harrell was among the top in the WAC in quarterback sacks with 10.5.
9. Be a Part of Game Day: Don't miss all the action and excitement surrounding game day at Bulldog Stadium. The band begins playing a few hours before the game as they march through the tailgating areas en route to the stadium. Football isn't the only show under the lights; the dance team and cheer perform throughout the games.
10. We Are Your Team: The Bulldogs are the Valley's team! Bulldogs young and old shouldn't miss any of the action of the 2011 season. Be there for Carr's first touchdown pass, Harrell's first quarterback sack or Rouse rushing for a touchdown. Don't miss the memories of 2011.
