FRESNO, Calif. - The focus remains the same as former Academic All-American Alexis Edwards takes over as the Bulldogs' interim head women's golf coach while Angie Cates-Moore is on maternity leave.
"I want to put us in a place to win a WAC championship," Edwards said. "We have a great group of returners and a very talented incoming freshman. I'm really excited for the season to start."
At Fresno State, Edwards will be charged with leading the Dogs during the 2011 fall season and she is thrilled for the opportunity to teach and mentor such a skilled roster and competitive program.
"When I was offered this position, I jumped at the opportunity," Edwards said. "I'm looking forward to helping the team be ready to compete for a title."
With Edwards' guidance, the Dogs will continue their emphasis on teamwork and community during the beginning of the road to reclaiming a Western Athletic Conference championship in Fresno State's final season before moving to the Mountain West Conference in July 2012.
"It takes teamwork and supporting our other athletic teams," Edwards said of what is needed to succeed this year. "Any support we give other student-athletes helps us get better."
The Bulldogs won their first team league title in 2008 when WAC Player of the Year Laura Luethke captured the individual championship and two years later, Hali Coppin secured Fresno State's second individual crown.
Edwards expects the Dogs to thrive with the return of all-WAC standout Louisa Lies and an impressive group of juniors and sophomores that helped lead Fresno State to a third-place finish at last year's WAC Tournament.
After receiving her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Phoneix in April 2010, Edwards worked as the Tournament Director and instructor at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.
Edwards played collegiately at Brigham Young University and propelled the Cougars to three consecutive NCAA West Regionals, including an appearance at the NCAA Championship during her junior season.
As a freshman, she earned Academic All-America honors as a Mountain West scholar-athlete who also qualified as a first alternate for the United States Amateur.
Before excelling at BYU, Edwards was a two-sport star at Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Calif. as she collected all-league honors in both golf and softball. Edwards qualified for the USGA's 2002 and 2003 Girls Amateur Championships and placed second at both the PGA Junior Series in Nevada and in the Northern California Westerfield PGA Championship.
Fresno State opens the 2011-12 season on Sept. 12-13 at the Colorado State Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.
