FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs took the early lead in Equitation on the Flat leading 3-2, but eventually fell to the SMU Mustangs 7-4.
The Fresno State Equestrian team competed in its first English-only event of the season at SMU Thursday afternoon.
Equitation on the Flat was first and the 'Dogs pulled a 3-2 victory recording a raw score of 455-454.
Senior Kimberly Steinbuch won the first point for the Bulldogs defeating her opponent 78-74. Juniors Lanie Madrazo and Lisa Beach each scored a point for the 'Dogs with a 78 and 77, respectively.
In Equitation over Fences, sophomore Hillary West was the only Bulldog to score a point defeating her opponent with a high score of 75.
The SMU Mustangs defeated the Bulldogs in Equitation over Fences 5-1 and a raw score of 464-445.
"Riding an unknown horse, in an unknown arena for competition is always difficult and today there were a few members of our team that rode exceptionally well; Kimberly Steinbuch (78), Laine Madrazo (78), Hillary West (75), Lisa Beach (77) and Lauren Carr (78)," said co-head coach Julia Scrivani. "As a team we rode well and the points don't reflect the fact that we had an 18 point difference in the raw score, we were right there to beat them."
Up next the Fresno State Equestrian team will travel to Waco, Texas to compete in the Willis Invitational at Baylor University. The 'Dogs will ride against South Dakota State University, Miami of Ohio and Baylor.
