FRESNO, Calif. - Brian Sunker, a senior on the Fresno State men's golf team, dominated the field at the Outlaw Cup during Labor Day weekend, winning by 15 strokes. The tournament is held annually at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera, Calif.
After shooting a 68 on both Saturday and Sunday, Sunker fired a 67 on the final day of competition to secure his victory and finish at 13-under, 203.
"My game felt really solid all weekend," Sunker said. "I worked really hard on my game this summer and I had a lot of confidence going in. The course was set up pretty tough but I was able to overcome it."
"Brian has been on the verge of some really great play and his confidence level is really high right now," Fresno State head coach Mike Watney said. "For him to win the tournament is not a surprise but for him to win in that dominant fashion is a pleasant surprise."
Sunker started the final day with a five-shot lead and was able to overcome the pressures of both being in the final group and a difficult course setup to build on his lead by 10 strokes.
"The tournament gave me experience of being in a final group and it also gives me a lot of confidence going into the season," Sunker continued.
Other participants in the tournament included current Bulldogs Nate Jessup and Keenan Nelson along with former Bulldog and defending champion Danny Paniccia. Paniccia won his third Fresno City Amateur title this year.
"I am looking forward to the upcoming season," Sunker said. "I don't want to put too much pressure on myself but I will go out there and play hard."
The Bulldogs open up their fall season Sept. 26-27 at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash.
