FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer community lost one of its own this past week. Christian Ogbodo ('88) died of natural causes at the age of 47.
Ogbodo was a four-year letterwinner for Bulldog soccer from 1984-87. The three-time all-conference defender was a member of the 1986 squad that advanced to the NCAA semifinals with an 18-5-2 record.
While a Bulldog, Ogbodo helped lead the team to two conference titles, the Pacific Soccer Conference in 1985 and the Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1986.
He was also a part of NCAA men's soccer attendance records during the 80's. He had the opportunity to play in front of 12,224 fans in Bulldog Stadium when the 'Dogs took on University of Southern Florida at home in 1987. Fresno State went on to be ranked as high as No. 1 by Soccer America and the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America.
A penalty kick specialist for the Bulldogs, he was a perfect 4-for-4 in the situation. Ogbodo finished his career after playing in 79 matches, earning 68 starts. He recorded 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists, having taken 53 shots.
Ogbodo worked his way into Fresno State records by earning a hat trick against Cleveland State in 1985. With him in the roster, the Bulldogs amassed a 65-21-7 overall record, going undefeated in the PSC (7-0-0) in 1985.
