Bulldogs Fall to Aztecs

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team fell to San Diego State in four sets on Saturday afternoon in the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs (16-9, 7-4 MW) opened the match with a strong first set win and the Aztecs stole the momentum taking three-straight sets for the victory.
Junior Lauren Albertson led the `Dogs offense hitting .478 with 11 kills. She also added an assisted block in the match.
Outside hitter Korrin Wild posted her 13th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs. She also contributed a service ace. Setter Barbara Alcantara led the squad with three aces.
Wild scored the first point of the match with a kill from the outside. She gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead over the Aztecs with her first service ace of the afternoon. The Bulldogs lead extended to 8-3 with a powerful kill in the middle of the net from Maci Murdock.
A service ace from Alcantara increased the `Dogs lead to 12-9 over the Aztecs in the opening set. Albertson and Megan Callahan combined for a block giving the Bulldogs a 22-19 advantage. Callahan recorded a block for set-point as the Bulldogs opened the match with a 25-22 first set victory. Callahan had two solo and one assisted blocks for a total of three blocks in the first set. She ended the match with a total of four blocks.
Fresno State trailed by three to start the second set, but a cut the Aztecs lead to one with a kill from Albertson. San Diego State held a seven-point lead over the Bulldogs late in the second set. The Aztecs even the match 1-1 after winning the second set 25-17.
In the third set, SDSU opened with a 6-1 run forcing Netherby-Sewell to call a timeout in attempt to slow the Aztecs momentum. The Bulldogs capitalized on a pair of Aztec errors as the momentum shifted and the `Dogs narrowed SDSU's lead to 13-10. San Diego State held on to win the third set 25-19 taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Jaimee-Lee Morrow came off the bench to record a pair of aces as the `Dogs trailed SDSU 15-13 in the fourth set. San Diego State held on to win a close fourth set 25-23 to win the match.
The Bulldogs hit the road next week to face Colorado State and Wyoming.
