Bulldogs Defeat Rainbows, 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team beat Hawai'i, 5-2 on Saturday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
After early morning rain the sun shined on the Bulldogs earned the doubles point quickly in the match.
No. 1 doubles team Marianne Jodoin and Tanya Murtagh earned the first win for the `Dogs against Hawaii's Katarina Poljakova and Jamie Pawid, 8-5. The No. 3 doubles duo, Laura Pola and Bianca Modoc clinched the point for the Bulldogs shortly after, beating Aglae Van den Bergh and Martina Kostalova, 8-5. Ashiwarya Agrawal and Olga Kirpicheva finished up doubles play when they fell to Barbara Pinterova and Xenia Suworowa, 8-4, at No. 3.
In singles, the `Dogs had a scary start. Pola fell to the Rainbows' Pawid, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Melissa McQueen fell to Kostalova, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles early in singles play. At No. 4 singles, Agrawal was the first to inject some energy to the Bulldog team as she beat Suworowa, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 49 Jodoin was next to win for the `Dogs as she battled Pinterova in a thrilling match to win, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Kirpicheva came from behind in a marathon match to defeat Poljakova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, and clinch the win for the Bulldogs. At No. 6 singles, Murtagh also came from behind but pulled out the last Bulldog win against Van den Bergh, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
"It was a great win because Hawai'i is one of the top teams in the WAC," Head Coach Simon Thibodeau said. "The team played with fire but we are going to have to step it up tomorrow against Saint Mary's if we are going to compete."
Tomorrrow the Bulldogs will have the tough feat of competing against No. 34 Saint Mary's when they face three ranked singles players No. 68 Jenny Jullien, No. 82 Catherine Isip and No. 116 Jade Frampton at noon at the Tim Korth Tennis Courtsin Moraga, Calif.
