FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs enjoyed the familiarity of home Monday as they sit in third place out of 13 teams at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. They trail San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton who are in first and second, respectively.
The 'Dogs were consistent by shooting 302 over both the first and second rounds and are at 28-over with one more round to play. They currently have three golfers in the top 25 for individual scores. The 'Dogs were led by Shaylee Yano, a native of Reedley, Calif., who shot a 4-over and is tied for sixth. Yano recorded a 1-over, 73 during the second round which was the fourth best score posted. She started the back nine by firing back-to-back birdies and finished the round with nine straight pars.
"Shaylee had a great second round today," head coach Angie Cates-Moore said. "Her confidence is back. Her ball striking was really good and her short game is very solid right now. Shaylee's attitude on the golf course was really relaxed and sure of herself today."
Christine Uhalde recorded a 7-over to finish the day in a tie for 17th. She knocked in six birdies over the two rounds which is the third best mark in the field.
"Christine continues to play with a lot of confidence since her win at Stanford," Cates-Moore said. "She is continuing to build on that win and play some great golf."
The last Bulldog to round out the top 25 is Louisa Lies who is currently in a tie for 21st at 8-over. She scattered five birdies over the two rounds.
Rounding out the team is Alison Timlin at 13-over (T40) and Madchen Ly at 14-over (T49). Sophomores Hillary Billingsley and Krysta Clark, who are both competing as individuals, also recorded 14-over and the other individual, Taylor Wilkinson, is in a tie for 63rd at 19-over.
San Jose State holds a one shot lead over Cal State Fullerton for first place and Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State is in the individual lead at 2-under, one stroke ahead of Fullerton's Tisha Alyn Abrea.
The 'Dogs will wrap up the Fresno State Lexus in the final group Tuesday with tee times starting at 9:20 a.m.
"We are excited to play in the final group and we are in a good position," Cates-Moore remarked. "The team has been working very hard during this season to put themselves in this position. They are comfortable in that position. Tomorrow should be fun."
The tournament, held at the 6,072-yard, par-72 Copper River Country Club, is open to the public.
"On a side note, Lexus is a great sponsor and they do so much for Fresno State Athletics," Cates-Moore concluded. "We appreciate all our volunteers and fans that came out today. Hope to see Bulldog support out there tomorrow."
