FRESNO, Calif. - Taking a break from the typical tournament format, the Bulldogs engaged in match play Thursday at the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Match Play Challenge and earned a spot in the championship match. The `Dogs cruised to a 5-0 victory over Utah State in their first match and then held off Claremont 3.5-1.5 in dramatic fashion to close out the day.
Against the Aggies, all of the 'Dogs took care of business with only Keenan Nelson going to the final hole, winning 2-up. Brian Sunker, Nate Jessup and Jack Mulroy all won 4 and 3 while Rufie Fessler defeated his opponent 5 and 4. Sunker shot out to 3-under after four holes and finished the match with six birdies.During their second match of the day, the Bulldogs won two of the first three matches and it came down to the final two groups.
"The two matches were square with two holes left so it could go either way at that point," head coach Mike Watney said. "Rufie Fessler hit the shot of the tournament on 18 in near darkness. From 157-yards, he hit it to about two feet from the cup to birdie and win the hole, so we won our third point right there."
To go with Fessler's 1-up victory, Nelson won 2 and 1 and Jessup defeated his opponent 5 and 3. Even though Sunker birdied the 17th to go up one, the match was halved since the Bulldogs had the win in hand.
The `Dogs will take on Seattle in the championship match with tee times starting at 9:15 a.m.
"It was a good day for the Bulldogs and we are excited for tomorrow," Coach Watney concluded.
