SANTEE, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team concluded the San Diego State Classic with a 5-1 victory over Charlotte on Sunday at the Santee Softball Complex.
Sunday's victory gives Fresno State a 3-2 record in the tournament and the `Dogs now stand 12-7 overall as they return home next weekend to host the Bayer CropScience Classic.
"We did accomplish quite a bit this weekend as far as figuring out what we need to do differently and how our attitudes need to be," head coach Wright said.
Freshman pitcher Destinee Levesque picked up her first career victory, throwing 5.2 innings of relief of Kiley Shae Aldridge who drew her first career start. Levesque only gave up two hits and she had three strikeouts with four walks.
"I was really pleased that Destinee came in and did a great job," Wright said. "I thought she got better with every inning and our bats came alive, which we really needed that to happen."
Offensively, Fresno State had 10 hits in the game and six of those came with two outs. In fact, all five Bulldog runs scored in the game happened when there were two outs.
"Timely hitting, whether it is to score early in the game or hit the runner in with two outs is how you win these games," Wright said. "Some people came through today that haven't been coming through and that was really good to see at the end of the tournament."
Brenna Moss, Vonnie Martin, Courtney Moore and Maria Sio all had two hits in the game. Stesha Brazil led the `Dogs with two runs driven in and Fresno State hit two home runs in the game.
Those both came on back-to-back jacks in the top of the first inning from Michelle Moses and Martin. It was Martin's second home run of the season and the seventh for Moses, who also drew three walks in the game.
Charlotte got an unearned run in the second, but Moss got that run back for the `Dogs with a two-out RBI triple in the fourth inning.
Stesha Brazil then gave the `Dogs a 5-1 lead in the sixth with her two-run double to center. Brazil's sixth double of the season also came when there were two outs.
