Women's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 48 Fresno State women's tennis team celebrated its last home match of the season with a 5-2 defeat over LMU at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Sunday.
The `Dogs (13-8) also recognized the four-year career of Senior Laura Pola at an emotional ceremony in front of a faithful crowd during the break in between singles and doubles play.
"I want to congratulate Laura on a great career at Fresno State," Head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She has contributed a lot to the program throughout the years and will be missed."
After the ceremony Pola gave a tearful speech to her teammates and the crowd.
"I'm extremely grateful for this experience," Pola said. "I feel so blessed to have been a part of this team and for Coach Thibodeau. I don't think my experience in college tennis would have been the same without him."
In doubles, the Bulldogs swept the Lions (8-15) at all positions to take the lead 1-0. Juniors Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva defeated Claudia Razzeto and Logan Finnell, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Marianne Jodoin and Pola clinched the doubles point at No. 1 with an 8-5 defeat of Ashley Anderson and Miya Jin.
In the summer-like heat the `Dogs slowly but surely continued on with their quest to earn their last win of the regular season. McQueen started it off for the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jin at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Aishwarya Agrawal began strong at No. 2 but retired the match in the second set due to dehydration.
Junior Bianca Modoc followed up at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Reka Rohonyi and 42nd-ranked singles player, Jodoin clinched the Bulldog win at No. 1 when she topped Razzeto, 6-1, 6-1. Pola fell to Anderson, 6-2, 7-6 (2), at No.5. Freshman Anne Susdorf wrapped up the match for the `Dogs with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ana Lucia Fuentes at the No. 6 spot.
"It may not have been a pretty win, but we are glad to be ending the season with a 13-8 record and excited to compete at our highest level in the post season," Thibodeau said.
Though this was a day for recognition and reflection, the Bulldogs are resting their rackets yet. The `Dogs travel to Las Cruces, N.M. for the WAC Championships starting this Thursday, April 26 with the hope of adding another WAC title to their long list of accomplishments.
