Day One Finds 'Dogs in Fifth

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team kicked off the first day of the WAC Championship by carding a 17-over, 305 to sit in fifth place out of six teams. The tournament is held at the 6,163-yard, par-72 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.
The Bulldogs, playing in their final WAC Championship, are only six strokes out of second place but three-time defending champion San Jose State shot out to an early 3-over, 291 advantage and holds onto first.Leading the way for the 'Dogs is senior Louisa Lies who fired a 1-over, 73 to tie for sixth place after one round. Lies recorded three birdies along with fellow teammate Christine Uhalde.
Freshman Madchen Ly is one stroke behind Lies at 2-over, 74 and in sole possession of ninth. Uhadle finished the day tied for 15th at 5-over, 77 while Shaylee Yano and Krysta Clark are in 21st (+9, 81) and 30th (+15, 87), respectively.
Charlee Kapiioho of Hawai'i is in first at 4-under 68 while last year's defending champion, Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro, Aileen Meredith of New Mexico State and San Jose State's Madeleine Ziegert are all tied for second at 2-under, 70.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday to compete in the second round of the WAC Championship with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. PST.
