FRESNO, Calif. - After another successful athletic year, Fresno State will leave the Western Athletic Conference as its most successful program of the last 10 years. For the third time since its inception, the WAC Commissioner's Cup belongs to the Bulldogs, the league announced Tuesday. Fresno State has finished top two in the Commissioner's Cup race each of the past five years, owning back-to-back wins 2007-09.
The Bulldogs won five championships and placed top three in nine programs during the 2011-12 season to help garner the award. The 'Dogs were the only WAC program to sweep both regular season and tournament championships in multiple sports, women's basketball and men's tennis.
Fresno State finished its last WAC campaign with 79.75 points. Idaho earned second with 74.25 points and New Mexico State finished in third at 69.75 points.
Given to the institution who performs the best in each of the WAC's 19 sports, the Commissioner's Cup has been around since the 2002-03 season. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport, and are averaged between a team's regular-season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams.
Because of the overall stellar performances and commitment to excellence of its athletic programs, Fresno State has maintained a dominant presence in the WAC, placing top three in the race for nine of the past 10 years. Of the institutions with the same longevity in the conference, the Bulldogs sit over 290 points ahead of the pack.
