FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team has added more international experience to its squad. Fanny Johansson (Gävle, Sweden) signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Bulldogs on the pitch in 2012, the organization announced.
"Fanny is a tremendous personality and an excellent soccer player and student," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "She is so energetic and enthusiastic about the opportunity. Her ambitions matched ours and we feel confident that as soon as she gets acclimated here she will have a very positive impact on and off the field."
Johansson is currently playing for the IFK Gävle Dam based out of Styrmansgatan, Sweden, where she helped the senior team finish first in the state tournament in 2009 and second in 2010 and 2011.
Her high school squad made it to the quarterfinals of the Swedish high school tournament in 2010 and was the eighth best program in the country in 2009.
Johansson also spent time on the state elite team in 2010 and 2011. The elite team is comprised of the state's best soccer players ages 15-19.
She joins a Bulldog program that is preparing for its first year in the Mountain West Conference after having broken several team and individual records in 2011.
"They play the attacking style that I love," said Johansson of a Bulldogs team that outscored opponents 35-23 and attempted 30 more shots on goal last season.
Fresno State women's soccer also has a tradition of academic excellence. For the past two years, Bulldogs have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans with six All-District nods.
"My ambitions are high both in soccer and academically," added Johansson. "I'm planning on studying business."
"She is truly equal with both feet and has a sharp soccer brain," said Zwaschka. "Her ambitions matched ours and we feel confident that as soon as she gets acclimated here, she will have a very positive impact on and off the field. We can't wait for Fanny to join the team and integrate her culture and character into the Bulldog soccer family."
Johansson joins a signing class of five that includes three local recruits.
