Freshmen lead 'Dogs at West Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country team finished its season at the NCAA West Regional Friday at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
The women only had three runners competing due to illness and were therefore unable to compete for team scoring. The men's team finished 25th out of 29 teams with 690 points.
Freshman Efren Reyes led the 'Dogs in the 10,000-meter course with a time of 31:33 to finish 108th. Fellow freshman runner, Joel Gonzalez was the second `Dog to cross the finish line with a time of 31:53 to finish 123rd. Junior Nathan Esparza was next to finish the race for the `Dogs in 139th, with a time of 32:21. Senior Chriss Grimble (156th, 32:42) and sophomore Uriel Cabanas (164th, 32:53) rounded out the scoring five for the `Dogs.
Host school Stanford's Maxim Korolev (29:33) narrowly defeated Oregon's Edward Cheserek (29:35) for the individual crown. The No. 2 Oregon men won the team title with 60 points, followed by No. 8 Portland with 71 points, No. 9 Stanford with 97 points, No. 17 UCLA with 104 points and No. 11 Washington with 139 points to round out the top five.
Freshman Mackenzie Landa led the team for the first time in her Bulldog career, by completing the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:49 to finish 81st. Red-shirt senior Carina Mendoza completed her cross country career finishing in 96th place with a time of 22:04 in the 6K. Senior Julianne Jacques rounded out the Fresno State runners finishing 167th (23:04) out of the field of 230 runners.
Arizona State's Shelby Houlihan (19:31.6) narrowly defeated Boise State's Emma Bates (19:34.2) for the individual crown. No. 3 Oregon won the meet with just 88 points, while No. 25 Boise State (103), No. 10 Stanford (103), No. 15 Washington (131) and No. 27 UCLA (176) rounded out the top five.
