FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team struggled to run its offense and contain a physical Northern Arizona Lumberjack squad as NAU defeated the Bulldogs on Thursday night at Rolle Activity Center in Flagstaff.
Fresno State (1-2) mustered just two assists and committed 18 turnovers as NAU sharp-shooter Aaseem Dixon went off for a career-high 30 points with seven 3-pointers and a 9-for-11 clip at the free throw line.
"We have to be able to guard," fourth-year Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We have to sit down and want to guard, want to get better on that end of the floor. We're going to keep working it and we're going to fix it."
The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior guard Julien Lewis (12 points and five rebounds), junior guard Marvelle Harris (11 points) and sophomore forward Karachi Edo (11 points).
Fresno State found itself in an early hole and never led in the contest. The Bulldogs trailed 39-23 at halftime and NAU built a 24-point lead at 53-29 with 11:31 remaining. Fresno State answered by going on a 19-8 run to pull within 61-48, including a 10-0 close to that run, over the next 6:48. The 'Dogs never pulled any closer and suffered its second straight road loss to start the season.
"We can't feel sorry for ourselves," Terry said. "Right now, we're working through some chemistry issues, just trying to get guys comfortable with playing with each other and understanding what they need to do on both ends of the floor."
The win for NAU (1-2) was its first of the season after losing at Xavier and Toledo to start the year.
