FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team (6-21, 1-12) fought hard against No. 10 Colorado State (24-2 12-1) with a three-set decision Thursday night at the Save Mart Center.
The rams suffered their second loss of the season (first in the MW) against UNLV last Saturday (3-1). The returning Mountain West champions, however, came away with the match tonight via a 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 score. Team-wise, CSU held edges in the final comparisons in kills (44-33), hitting (.319-.082), assists (42-37), aces (2-1), blocks (13-8) and digs (36-28).
"I think that we played well tonight," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We were facing the number 10 team in the country and we are battling injury after injury and battling adversity. My outsides played great, I was very impressed with them. Jaimee-Lee Morrow seemed to play the match of her life tonight, and I like seeing all the little things come together. This team comes together no matter what, they keep fighting and they keep trying."
Junior outside hitter Zana Bowens led the `Dogs in kills (12) and points (13.5) while playing a large role on the court. Senior outside hitter Jaimee-Lee Morrow added 10 kills and 11.5 points for the `Dogs against the Rams.
Junior setter Jelena Jovanovic marked 13 assists on the night and two digs. Brooke Legaux, the other half the 6-2 setter rotation ended the night with 11 assists and two digs.
Freshman Carly Scarbrough added seven kills to the match and eight points.
Ram stat leaders included Adrianna Culbert (12 kills, .706, 13.5 points), Kelsey Snider (8 kills, 11 points, .267), Deedra Foss (38 assists, 5 digs) and Jasmine Hanna (10 kills, .250, 11.5 points).
In a set that had 10 lead changes, the `Dogs led in the first set 14-12. CSU went on a 6-1 run before a Fresno State timeout was called. After the timeout, the `Dogs were able to fight to a 20-20 tie. Fresno State would tie the set again at 21-21, but was unable to control a 4-0 run by CSU to complete the set.
In the first half of the set two, the `Dogs proved that they were able to compete with the Rams, to tie the score at 10. After multiple runs by CSU the `Dogs found themselves down 23-16 and were not able to fight back, falling 25-16 at the end of set two.
Coming from the locker room, the `Dogs started set three with a sense of urgency. Though there were multiple ties at the start of the match the `Dogs had to call a timeout when CSU went up 11-8. Despite CSU leading by as many as four in the set, Fresno State able slash its deficit to 20-19 with a block by Morrow. That block forced CSU to use its only timeout of the match, but finished the set on a 5-1 run ending the match.
Looking ahead, Fresno State plays Wyoming at home Sat., Nov. 18, 4 p.m. PT.
