`Dogs Cap Roadrunner Classic vs. Bakersfield

The Roadrunners ended a seven-match series losing streak with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 decision in the Roadrunner Classic finale.
Team-wise, Bakersfield held edges in kills (48-36), hitting (.295-.180), digs (54-43), aces (4-1), and fewer service errors (4-6), and Fresno State sported an advantage in blocks (6-5).
Individually for Fresno State, junior outside hitter Zana Bowens topped the team in kills (10) and hitting (.320) for the ninth and third times this year, and her match-high 18 digs was a team three-set season high and led the `Dogs for the fifth time in 2014.
Senior outside hitter Jaimee-Lee Morrow added nine kills - one shy of her fourth double-digit tally of the season - and hit .250.
Freshman defensive specialist Jacqueline Hutcheson claimed her 11th ace of the season - second most on the squad - and led the team in the category for the fourth time this season.
Freshman middle blocker Lauren Torres posted five blocks to tie her season high from Friday and paced the team for the fourth time in 2014. Offensively, the Visalia, Calif., native added five kills - two off her season high - and hit .286.
Individually, Bakersfield featured three players with +10 kills - Danika Youngbood (18, .368, 1 ace), Molly O'Hagan (11, .421, 5 blocks) and Kelsee Sawyer (11, .196). Other category leaders included Luiza Martins (43 assists, 1 ace), Mariah Alvidrez (19 digs) and Sydney Haynes (1 ace).
Also Saturday night, the tournament champion Oregon State featured three players on the all-tourney team - Mary-Kate Marshall (MVP), Amanda Brown and Arica Nassar, and were joined by Long Beach State's Chisom Okpala and Alex Reid, CSUB's Danika Youngblood and Fresno State's Bowens.
Bowens also picked up similar all-tourney reviews in the Adidas Rice Invitational and Sacramento State Invitational - the first of her career - the opening two weeks of the campaign.
Looking ahead, Fresno State returns home to host its first match of the season, and face crosstown foe Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center.
