Bulldogs Take Third In Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Fresno State cross country team competed at the Sundodger Invitational on Sept. 20. Both teams captured third-place finishes behind two strong Pac-12 Conference teams.
The Fresno State women scored a total of 80 points with their top finisher in the 6K race, junior Annemarie Schwanz finishing fifth overall (20:46) and giving the Bulldogs three points. The No. 14 University of Washington Husky women finished first with 25 points, followed by Washington State (second, 42 points), and Seattle University (fourth, 89 points).
The Bulldog men's team placed third overall, losing to Washington State (first, 24 points) which upset the No. 27 UW men (second, 33 points) to snap a seven-year winning streak for the Dawgs on their home course. Seattle University finished fourth with a total of 107 points.
The women had four runners in the top-25 led by Schwanz (fifth, 20:46), who ran a time fast enough to rank her third on the Bulldogs' all-time list. Junior Julianne Jacques followed in 20th place overall (21:54), and followed by freshman Mackenzie Landa (22nd, 22:00). The final two scorers for the Bulldogs on Saturday were senior Meagan Paracholski (35th, 23:36) and sophomore Taylor Samson (41st, 24:03). Fresno State sophomore Brittany Laygo rounded out the women's team finishing 43rd with a time of 24:29.
In the men's race, senior Chriss Grimble was the top finisher for the `Dogs, placing 19th overall in the first 8K of the season. Just two seconds behind him was sophomore Matt Kwiatkowski placing 20th overall with a time of 25:18.
He was followed by a tight pack of Bulldogs starting with junior Nathan Esparza who was once again the third person to score for the `Dogs finishing 24th with a time of 25:37. Four seconds later sophomore Uriel Cabanas finished the race (25th, 25:41), and freshman Joel Gonzalez (26th, 25:46) rounded out the `Dogs scoring five. Other `Dog finishers included freshman Efren Reyes (27th, 25:47) and sophomores Cooper Gill ( 43rd, 26:55) and Esteban Vega (46th, 27:23).
Looking ahead the `Dogs will compete at the Stanford Invitational (Sat. Sept. 27). Three weeks later the `Dogs will be splitting up the teams. The women's team will travel to the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational (Sat. Oct. 18) to get familiar with the course that will host the NCAA National Championships. The Bulldog men will travel to the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational (Sat. Oct. 18).
"Be Bold!" - The 'Dogs host the Mountain West Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 31st at Woodward Park.
