FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team wrapped up the 2014 Wolverine Intercollegiate Classic tournament, finishing 11th with a team total of 34-over par (299-292-295=886).
"We had some struggles out there and weren't where we needed to be to start the season" said head men's golf coach Chad Spencer. "With more experience this team will continue to grow and get better."
Though the team did not do as well as was hoped for, but Michael Pugh showed promise with a strong beginning to the tournament.
"Michael Pugh had a nice first day for the team" said Spencer. "He is an emerging player and someone we can rely on as the season progresses."
Keenan Nelson finished in the top spot for the 'Dogs by shooting 7-over (75-72-73--220). Pugh was right behind Nelson with 8-over (74-71-76--221).
Harold Calubid shot 11-over (80-73-71--224) to stay in a three way tie for 52nd. Russell Takeuchi finished the tournament at 14-over (75-77-75--227) and finally, Justin Avery finished 16-over (75-76-78--229) to tie for 61st to wrap up the Wolverine Intercollegiate Classic.
Michigan claimed the sole team title shooting 7-under par (278-280-287--845). Penn State followed behind to claim second with a 3-over (289-287-279--855).
The `Dogs will take that experience and learn from it as they prepare for their next tournament, Sept. 15-16 in Seaside Calif. at the St. Mary's College Invite.
