RENO, Nev. - A combined 58 points from seniors Raven Fox, Alex Sheedy and junior Shauqunna Collins led Fresno State (15-3, 7-0 MW) to its 11th consecutive win in a 62-44 victory over Nevada (6-11, 2-4 MW) on Saturday at the Lawlor Events Center. The Bulldogs held the Wolf Pack to its second-lowest scoring output of the season, behind only the 43 they held them to on Jan. 10.
Sheedy paced the 'Dogs with her sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Not far behind was Fox with 19 points and Collins with 17 points as the two guards drove to bucket at will. Along with Sheedy, Bego Faz Davalos also recorded a team-high 11 rebounds.
Despite not scoring a point, the redshirt freshman center also posted six blocks, surpassing both the Mountain West freshman records for blocks in overall games (62) and conference only games (34). Both records were previously held by New Mexico's Jordan Adams which she set during the 1999-2000 season.
Collins opened up the game with a 3-pointer from right side as the defense sagged off, but Nevada went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-3 lead. Collins ended the run though as she drove down the right side of the paint a flipped a lay-up off of the glass over the outstretched arm of 6-foot-8 Mimi Mungedi. She tacked on the free throw after being fouled on the play.
A lay-up by Sheedy with 15:33 on the clock leveled the game at 8-8 to erase the Nevada run. After a near four-minute drought for both teams, a jumper from Sheedy gave the 'Dogs a 10-8 advantage.
She added three more within a 20 second span as the Bulldogs' run continued. With another three minutes passing without a bucket for either side, Fox banked in a 3-pointer with 7:30 on the clock to push the lead to 15-8. Less than two minutes later, Sheedy followed with a triple of her own.
Nevada ended a 0-of-14, 10-plus minute drought with a bucket from Kelsey Kaelin with 5:26 to go in the half. Fox though responded with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 21-10 with just over five minutes to go.
Nevada got back into the game with a 6-2 spurt before the two teams traded field goals near the end of the half. A jumper from Iman Lathan with three seconds left made it a 27-21 Bulldog lead after the first 20 minutes.
After giving up the opening bucket of half, a jumper for the left side by Sheedy sparked an 11-0 run as Collins scored on back-to-back layups before Sheedy dropped a 3-pointer. Collins added another layup to extend the lead to 38-25 with 16:11 remaining.
Fresno State's advantage hovered around 10 points for much of the half before the team began to put the game well out of reach with under six minutes to play. The 'Dogs ended the game on a 12-4 run with Fox scoring the team's final eight points.
The Bulldogs return home for their next two games, beginning with San Diego State on Jan. 28. Tipoff against Aztecs is slated for 7 p.m., PT and will stream live on the Mountain West Network with Christian Lukens on the call for ESPN2 790AM.
