STOCKTON, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming team opened its 2015-16 campaign with day one of the University of the Pacific Invitational on Friday night. The Bulldogs sit in fourth place with 237 points behind Nevada (513), Pacific (323) and San Jose State (272). Fresno Pacific is currently in fifth with 121 points.
"We've started out really well," Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "Our 200 Medley Relay was really good and Brooke Rodriguez's 100 Breaststroke was really strong, it was great. We have to learn from some mistakes and how to bounce back from them, but there were a lot of positives."
In the 200 Medley Relay, Fresno State quartet Ugne Mazutaityte, Brooke Rodriguez, Tarryn Rennie and Leah Hatayama finished fourth with a solid 1:46.20. The Bulldogs also had the group of Kali Conlon, Hailee Baldwin, Gabbie Libang and Katelin Britton finish ninth (1:50.42).
In the 100 Breaststroke, Rodriguez finished third with a 1:05.70.
Fleck was impressed with performances from some of the team's newcomers, such as freshman Mazutaityte, who came in fourth in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 57.26 seconds. She was joined in the top 10 by junior Esme Gullick (58.29, seventh).
Gullick stepped up in the 200 IM, placing fourth (2:07.73), and was joined in the top 10 by Baldwin (2:10.78, seventh) and Libang (2:12.36, 10th).
Rennie and Libang finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 100 Butterfly with times of 58.09 and 58.32.
As for the 400 Freestyle Relay, the group of Hatayama, Rodriguez, Rennie and Britton had a time of 3:34.91, which was enough to come in fifth. Mazutaityte, Conlon, Ally Short and Samantha Giannetta came in ninth (3:43.60).
"It's a good place to start," Fleck added. "We're in the hunt. We just have to step up and score some more points."
Fresno State returns to the pool on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. for the conclusion of the UOP Invite.
