SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced that Fresno State tennis player Maiar Sherif Ahmed has been included in the 32-person singles field that will compete for the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship. The tournament will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., from Nov. 12-15.
"It is a big honor to be selected as part of the 32 individuals invited to compete at National Indoors," Fresno State women's tennis head coach Ryan Stotland said. "Maiar is honored to be selected as one of the at-large bids as everyone in the country wants to be part of the 32 invited to this big event. She knows she wants to make the most of her invitation but is not satisfied just being there. She wants to prove why they invited her."
The 32-person field features many of the nation's top players, including eight of ITA's top 10 and 15 who are ranked in the top 25. There are seven athletes in the tournament which were not ranked in the ITA's preseason rankings, four of which won their regional championships. Ahmed will enter the tournament ranked No. 104.
The sophomore from Lycée, Egypt earned one of the 10 at-large spots by finishing as the runner-up at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. On her way to the championship match, ninth-seeded Ahmed defeated No. 16 Klara Fabikova (Cal), the No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinals and No. 17 Caroline Doyle (Stanford), the No. 3 seed, in the semifinals. The Bulldog defeated both opponents in straight sets.
