Head Coach Jaime White
Opening Statement...
"It was a disappointing loss today. I thought we recovered very well in the first half after getting down early and getting the score tied at halftime, which was nice. Holding them to 27 rebounds was a positive. I thought [Malina Hood] made every single play in the book and we knew she was going to be a good player. I thought we did a good job on her early. It was nice to only have 12 turnovers, but to only shoot 50 percent from the free throw line is frustrating."
On seeing a second half lead slip away in the final minutes of the fourth quarter…
"We got up and had some players make some plays. We had Shauqunna Collins come in and score some points. We know that we are going to go on runs and they are going to go on runs and I just thought we let our defense slip. We did not get some rebounds when we needed them and we gave them multiple opportunities for offensive rebounds."
On how the final play for the Bulldogs unfolded…
"You cannot designate the ball for one person and the goal was to get a draw and kick and whether it was on one side or the other, we had open shots tonight, and we have to knock them down. Bree [Knishka] got an open shot and so did Brittany [Aikens] in the corner and we just have to knock down shots like San Diego's Malina Hood was able to."
On playing great defense and forcing teams to shoot…
"The talent of our games are very good. Cal Poly, Saint Mary's and tonight, we have to learn to finish. That is our challenge and we have to learn that every quarter counts. We need to stop runs a little sooner and defend a little harder and knock down free throws when they matter. We know things are getting heated and we know the game is physical and we have to hold our own. At the end of the day, we have to make shots and get through that physicality and if we miss our shots, we have to get rebounds. I thought we did a good job executing and I like Emilie Volk in the lineup. She gives us a bit of a different look and she played very well and to get contributions from her going into conference in a big thing. We have one more game at Utah next week and hopefully we can come home on a good note."
On a week off before the ‘Dogs play next…
"It is never good to have a week off to be honest, but it is good since we have finals. We will have a chance to get our legs back and I think we have to stay hungry, competitive and focused. We are one game away from heading into conference feeling really good."
Alex Furr, Guard, Redshirt Senior
On moving forward from this tough defeat…
"Yeah, I think we have to build on it and find positive things we can build on. We just have to be better overall."
Bego Faz Davalos, Center, Redshirt Sophomore
On finding open teammates today…
"That is what we are looking for and when I get doubled, I look to find the open player. The guards are doing a great job and made some good shots tonight."
