FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team cruised to an 89-46 win over the Pacific Union Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (9-4) used a solid team effort to win its final non-conference game of the season before opening Mountain West play Wednesday at UNLV (9-4).
The 'Dogs are now 8-1 at home and finished their non-conference schedule with nine wins - the Bulldogs' most since 2006 and the highest mark in head coach Rodney Terry's five-year tenure. The nine non-conference victories are also tied for the most by any Mountain West team this season.
"I think we've done what we needed to do in nonconference play," Terry said. "I think we've put ourselves in pretty good position. We know that our league has a lot of parity from top to bottom. We aren't going to have any nights off and we need to compete at a very high level."
Fresno State was led by senior guard Julien Lewis, who scored a team-high 14 points, to lead seven Bulldogs in double figures. Junior forward Karachi Edo recorded his seventh career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Fresno State shot 53 percent, had a 49-31 rebounding advantage and forced 22 turnovers. The Bulldogs scored 34 points after turnovers and, with 21 offensive rebounds, scored 23 second-chance points. The difference in points in the paint was 50-18.
The Bulldogs led the Pioneers 39-24 at halftime with a 29-7 first-half closing run fueling the 15-point lead at the half.
Fresno State starts its Mountain West campaign on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. PT at UNLV on ESPNU and 940 AM ESPN Radio.
