`Dogs Take Second-Place at Opening Spring Tournament

SEAL BEACH, Calif. - Starting two strokes back from the lead after the first two rounds, the Fresno State women's golf team held its position all day on Tuesday to earn a second-place finish following the final round at The Gold Rush, hosted by Long Beach State.
"Really exciting start for us," said head coach Emily Milberger. "Definitely a little disappointing with how we finished today's round, but we're very excited about what's coming ahead."
Fresno State carded a team score of 308 (+20) on Tuesday, its highest score of the tournament, but still under the 310 average on a tough day at Old Ranch Country Club for the 11-team field. The Bulldogs three-day score of 902 (299-295-308) was five shots better than third place, but 19 shots back from the tournament winner, host Long Beach State. The 49ers pulled away Tuesday with a final day three-over par 291 after entering the final round just two strokes up on the Bulldogs.
Junior Hannah Sodersten (74-71-78--223) and freshman Mimi Ho (75-74-74--223) both claimed fifth-place finishes as the pair tied one another at seven-over par at the 54-hole tournament.
"It's exciting to have a couple of top 10 finishes," Milberger said. "I'm really looking forward to those players capitalizing on some time off before we head to San Jose (Juli Inkster Spartan Invite). The level of play is outstanding and it's looking to be a very exciting spring."
The Bulldogs will be back in action Feb. 23-24 at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, hosted by San Jose State.
