LAS VEGAS --- As the college basketball world came together in praying for the health of Hall of Fame coach and former Fresno State player Jerry Tarkanian, the Bulldogs' men's basketball team struggled to contain the high octane UNLV Runnin' Rebels' offense in losing 73-61 Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Fresno State (11-13, 6-5 Mountain West) allowed UNLV to make eight 3-pointers, including seven in the first half. The Rebels' Christian Wood had 27 points, with career highs of 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots, to lead UNLV (14-10, 5-6 MW). Wood, who was 8 of 18 from the floor and made 11 of 17 free throws, collected his 14th double-double of the year and Rashad Vaughn added 18 points for UNLV.
"We had some opportunities to get back in this game, but UNLV made plays," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "Our sense of urgency needs to be a very high level at this time of year and we have to now get ready to play another great team in Boise State."
Lewis had 16 points, Karachi Edo added 13 with 10 rebounds for his third career double-double and Marvelle Harris chipped in 12 for Fresno State. Harris' double-digit scoring streak is now at 20 straight games and the junior team captain has moved into the program's Top 20 all-time scoring list with 1,190 points.
It was a defensive struggle early on as Fresno State and UNLV were tied 12-12 midway through the first half before the Runnin' Rebels inched ahead toward halftime before using a 7-0 run to end the half to build a 10-point lead for UNLV at 35-25.
The Rebels jumped ahead by 18 at 48-30 with just over 14 minutes to play, but the Bulldogs settled in for stretches of the second half, climbing back with eight at 59-51 through a combination of pressure defense and timely shots. UNLV
