COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West announced its 2014 Fall Academic All-MW Team on Wednesday morning and it named 51 Fresno State student-athletes to its list.
This is the second fall semester in a row that Fresno State has had more than 50 student-athletes honored for their success in the classroom, and it comes after a record-breaking fall for the Bulldogs. Fresno State as a department held a 3.13 fall term GPA, the highest ever on record for a fall term among the entire student-athlete population.
Fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
The department as a whole will honor and recognize its student-athletes at Wednesday's Bulldog men's basketball game against Colorado State. Fresno State had 283 student-athletes all together post GPAs of 3.0 or higher last fall semester, and those student-athletes will be recognized at halftime of Wednesday's game.
Additionally, the student-athletes will be greeting fans as they enter the Save Mart Center when doors open at 6 p.m. PT, thanking the fans for their support.
Fresno State's 51 honorees were the third-most in the conference, trailing New Mexico and Utah State who both had 61 honorees.
The Bulldog volleyball team's 12 honorees were the most by any team in the conference for that sport. Fresno State also had 18 football players, 12 soccer players, five women's cross country runners and four men's cross country runners selected to the Academic All-Mountain West team.
