Bulldogs Split Matches on Day One at Mountain Pacific Invite

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team split its opening day matches at the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The Bulldogs defeated Idaho, 4-0, Friday morning at Brookside Country Club, before coming back in the evening and falling 4-3 to San Francisco.
Fresno State made quick work of its morning match against the Vandals. Sai Kartik Nakireddi and Nikolas Papic won the first doubles match 6-1 at No. 3, and Joshua Zeoli and Youssef Hassan clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Bulldogs swept through singles action as Eric Komati defeated Jackson Varney 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to start the run. The 'Dogs clinched the dual match with the fifth and sixth flights as Nikolas Papic won 6-1, 6-3 and Alexandros Georgios Vakouftsis earned his first win of the season, 6-2, 6-3.
In the evening match, Fresno State took a 1-0 lead on San Francisco after doubles competition as the team's No. 2 and No. 3 pairs picked up the wins again, this time with identical 6-2 scores.
In singles play, Zeoli and Vakouftsis picked up wins in the fourth and sixth flights, but it wasn't enough for the 'Dogs. Fresno State fell in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 5 and San Francisco also grabbed three-set wins in the second and third flights to pick up the dual set victory.
The Bulldogs will face Cal Poly on Saturday at Brookside Country Club in the third-place match. The dual is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m., PT. The two teams met in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Jan. 16 with the Mustangs earning a 4-3 win.
