BOISE, Idaho --- The Fresno State men's basketball team struggled to finish plays on offense and did not match the firepower of Boise State as the Bulldogs lost 71-52 to the Broncos on Saturday night at Taco Bell Arena.
"A lot of it had to do with our offense and not our defense," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We did a good job defensively (in the first half). If our offense gives us something, we have a chance to have it be a one-possession game at halftime. And then we didn't have the pop and energy we needed to start the second half. You can't do that against good teams on the road this time of year."
The loss secured Fresno State (15-16, 10-8 Mountain West) as the No. 6 seed for this coming week's 2015 Mountain West Basketball Championship in Las Vegas and open play in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. PT. The Bulldogs will open against the third-seeded Colorado State Rams, who swept the season series with Fresno State during conference play.
"We are down like everyone in our league to a one-game season and we have to leave it all out on the floor," Terry said.
On Saturday night, James Webb III had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Boise State to its first conference title since 2008. Nick Duncan, Derrick Marks and Mikey Thompson each scored 14 points as the Broncos (24-7, 14-4), who clinched the No. 1 seed for the MW tournament and a share of the regular season title with San Diego State.
Cezar Guerrero scored 11 points and Marvelle Harris added 10 for the Bulldogs, who shot just 34.8 percent from the field while having a three-game winning streak halted.
Boise State scored the first nine points and never trailed. The Broncos led by nine at halftime and erupted on a 16-2 surge to start the second half.
