FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Athletics capped off a banner season in the classroom by posting a new school-year record GPA for the entire student-athlete population, Bulldog Athletics announced Monday.
Fresno State's student-athlete population posted a 3.12 GPA for the 2014-15 school year, which is the highest ever on record for an entire year.
"Our student-athletes continue to make us proud and their successes in the classroom is something that the entire community can be proud of," Fresno State Director of Athletics Jim Bartko said. "This was a product of all the hard work put in by our student-athletes along with the great support they receive from our coaches, academic services staff and the University community. I am very pleased to see our student-athletes excelling."
Fourteen (14) Fresno State sport programs posted team GPAs of over 3.0 this season, which is the first time that many programs have been above a 3.0 in the last eight years.
Other academic highlights from the recently completed school-year include:
Of the roughly 427 Bulldog student-athletes, 253 of them (or 60 percent) posted GPAs of 3.0 or higher for the spring 2015 semester.
Fresno State had 137 student-athletes record spring 2015 GPAs of 3.5 or higher and 44 had perfect 4.0 GPAs this spring semester.
The women's tennis team had the highest team GPA, finishing the school-year at 3.73.
Fresno State's volleyball (3.49), women's golf (3.49), men's tennis (3.45) and women's swimming and diving (3.42) were the other programs to post team GPAs of over 3.4.
The Fresno State football program posted its highest team GPA in eight years, finishing with a GPA of 2.76 this year. The Bulldogs had 18 football players named to the 2014 Fall Academic All-Mountain West teams.
The Bulldog baseball team matched its 2013-14 GPA of 3.20 this year, which is its highest in the last eight years and marked the fifth-straight season they posted a team GPA of over 3.0.
The men's golf (3.09), men's track and field (3.08), women's basketball (3.34), women's swimming and diving (3.42), women's tennis (3.73) and women's volleyball (3.49) programs all had their highest team GPAs in the last eight years.
The women's lacrosse program, which started back in 2008-09 school-year, had its highest-ever team GPA at 3.39 this year.
Back in January 51 Bulldog student-athletes were named to the 2014 Fall Academic All-Mountain West team, which was the third-most by any school in the conference.
The Mountain West will be releasing the Spring 2015 Mountain West Academic All-Conference teams and the 2014-15 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Awards later this summer.
