FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team kicked off its 2015 season with an intersquad scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center.
"I was most impressed with the fans," head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said. "We had a good group of people out for just an intersquad scrimmage and that's exciting, the Save Mart Center is a great environment and it was a successful event."
The blue team, consisting of returners Zana Bowens, Brooke Legaux and libero Jacqueline Hutcheson along with newcomers Brielle Hefner, Taylor Slover, Gertu Vider and Sabrina Winslow, took three consecutive sets on Saturday. Maintaining at least a four point lead at each timeout, the blue topped the white squad 25-22, 25-17 and 25-17.
"The match really told us a lot about who's ready and who needs a little more time," Netherby-Sewell added. "It was interesting to see players like Jacqueline step up and play lights out, we haven't seen that out of her much so that was fascinating. We have a lot of new players who serve as stabilizers for us, they don't necessarily stand out but they do a lot of little things really well. Brielle and Sabrina took care of little things and helped stabilize the team today. It was fun to see, we still have some unanswered questions in certain positions, but I think we have a lot of good stuff to work with this year."
Returners for the white team included libero Maggie Eppright, Jelena Jovanovic, Carly Scarbrough and Lauren Torres, who competed alongside freshmen Jordyn Griggs and Aleksandra Simeonova and junior transfer Aleisha Coates.
The action provided the Red Wave with a first look at this season's incoming class, as the `Dogs welcome eight newcomers to its 15-person roster.
Up next, the team takes the road this Thursday for a three-game tournament season opener in Cullowhee, N.C., before hosting Cal Poly on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
This season, all home matches will be featured on the Mountain West Network, fans can catch the action live on the Mountain West Network.
