Landa leads 'Dogs with top-10 finish at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Led by a top-ten performance from sophomore Mackenzie Landa, the Fresno State cross country team's had a solid showing on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational hosted at the Stanford Golf Course.
The women got the racing started in the morning in the strong 30-team field that featured 256 runners with three runners among the top 100 finishers. Landa paced the 'Dogs with her third top finish for the 'Dogs in as many weeks finishing 10th overall in a time of 21:07.2. The San Dimas, Calif., native took off more than a minute from her time in 2014 when she finished 47th.
A week after running the fifth-fastest 6K time in Bulldogs history at the Sundodger Invitational in 21:05, Landa continued her strong early season with the sixth-fastest time in program history and fastest-ever at the Stanford Invitational. Brittany Laygo finished 79th clocking a time of 22:37 and took off more than three minutes from her time in 2014. Rounding out the scoring for the 'Dogs were Cristal Rivera (95th, 22:52.4), Meagan Paracholski (132nd, 23:31.6) and Raven Nunez (166th, 23:51.1).
Fresno State finished 15th as a team with 398 points. Stanford, ranked fifth in the nation, claimed the top spot with 44 points followed by Cal Poly (65), UC Davis (187), Chico State (190) and UC Santa Barbara (227) to round out the top five.
On the men's side, Matt Kwiatkowski was the top finisher for the Bulldogs in the 8K with a 56th-place finish running a time of 24:52.6. Efren Reyes followed with a 68th-place finish in 25:04.3 and the 'Dogs were rounded out by Joel Gonzalez (80th, 25:13.4), Cooper Gill (111th, 25:37.7) and Clay Celum (124th, 25:44.8). Senior Nathan Esparza (138th, 25:56.8) and junior Uriel Cabanas (173rd, 26:24.3) also ran for the 'Dogs. Gonzalez and Gill took off more than a minute and two minutes, respectively from their times at this race in 2014.
The men finished 13th in the 30-team field with 354 points. Stanford, ranked second in the country, won the race with 62 points and the Cardinal were followed by Chico State (67), Cal Poly (97), Cal Poly Pomona (128) and UC Davis (168).
The 'Dogs return to action next Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Sacramento State Invitational hosted at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex with the women running 5000 meters and the men competing in the 8000 meters.
