ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State indoor track and field team saved the best for last as its 4x400 meter relay team took home first place in what was the final event on Saturday at the Cherry and Silver Invitational two-day event. The Bulldogs 4x4 team claimed first place by clocking a 3:41.81 time against a field of 14 relay teams.
Saturday's quartet included Kyra Johnson, Nailah Harris-Murillo, Maja Pogorevc and Njeri Omawahleh. The relay time currently stands as the fastest in the Mountain West this season by a 10-second margin and was three seconds off a school record that has stood since 1998.
In what was an otherwise light day for the Bulldogs compared to Friday's action, Fresno State competed in just two other events.
Shakira Lewis fell short of qualifying for the 60m dash final, posting a 7.79-second time. She was 10th of 12 and the Top 8 qualified. The senior clocked a 7.64 to qualify for the semifinal on Friday by winning her heat.
In the shot put, Kayla Hopkins registered a 13.48m (44'-02.75") throw and Yazmin Torres' top throw was a 13.31m (43'-08.00") mark, which was a personal record. They finished 12th and 14th, respectively, out of 43 individuals.
Next up for Fresno State is a split weekend on Jan. 29-30 as select members will travel to the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash. and the 4x400m relay team will travel to the House of Track in Portland, Ore.
