Second-Half Surge Powers `Dogs Past Broncos 62-57

FRESNO, Calif. - Overcoming an 11-point halftime deficit, Fresno State used a Moriah Faulk 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:28 left in the game to give the Bulldogs a 62-57 victory for over Boise State on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center in front of a crowd of 1,663.
Fresno State (8-7, 4-0 MW) extended its winning streak to four games and defeated the Broncos for the 14th time in the last 15 meetings. Four `Dogs finished in double figures on the afternoon as Bego Faz Davalos led the way with 13 points and added 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Shauqunna Collins scored 12 points and added a career-best 10 rebounds for her first career double-double while also tying her season-best with five assists. Alex Furr added 11 points and Toni Smith chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
Boise State was led in scoring by Brooke Pahukoa with 27 points as she hit 5-of-8 from behind the arc and added nine rebounds in 38 minutes of play. Miquelle Askew added 10 points as no other Bronco had more than five points.
After the Broncos hit nearly 50 percent from the field in the first half and took a 34-23 lead into halftime, the Bulldogs heated up from the field in the third quarter shooting 69.2 percent from the field in the frame connecting on 9-of-13 from the field to outscore the Broncos by 13 in the quarter and took a 49-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After Pahukoa hit a pair of free throws to give the Broncos back a one-point lead, Furr hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to put the `Dogs back up by four at 54-50. After a free throw from Breanne Knishka pushed the `Dogs lead up to five, the Broncos scored seven of the next nine points to tie the game at 57 with 4:43 left as the Bulldogs held the visitors scoreless the remainder of the game.
The `Dogs held the Broncos to 26.9 percent (7-26) shooting from the field in the second half as the Broncos finished shooting 36.8 percent (21-57) for the game compared to the `Dogs shooting 41.5 percent (22-53) for the game. Despite trailing the rebounding battle by six in the first half, Fresno State was plus-14 in the second half as the Bulldogs outrebounded Boise State 42-34 and improved to 6-2 when getting more boards than their opponents. The Bulldogs overcame their largest deficit of the season in a win as they stormed back from a 15-point setback in the second quarter.
Fresno State returns to Mountain West conference action next Saturday on the road at San Jose State at 2 p.m. PT.
