Bulldogs add Dario for 2017-18 season

Dario comes to Fresno State from Italy where she has won numerous youth tournaments and holds WTA rankings in singles and doubles.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State head women's tennis coach Ryan Stotland announced the signing of Italian Alessia Dario on Monday.

"We could not be happier that Alessia will be a Bulldog," Stotland said. "She is a great tennis player, great academically, and just a great person. She will bring a tremendous attitude on and off the court. I know she will embrace all of the challenges ahead of her.

"Going through the recruiting process was easy for us with Alessia because we knew she was the perfect fit for our team. Her accomplishments on the court are impeccable but we were more impressed with her as a person. Alessia has a passion for everything in life and we know that passion will be contagious amongst the team."

Dario, a native of Francenigo, Italy, has won numerous regional and national tournaments since she began competing at the Under-14 level. At the Under-16 level, she won a European grade 2 tournament in Germany in singles, and grade 3 and grade 1 tournaments in doubles.

In 2014 she competed for Italy at an international U16 winter tournament where she played in every match in singles and helped her country to a fourth place ranking in Europe. That year, Dario earned a European ranking of No. 48 (U16).

Dario currently holds Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings in both singles and doubles, with her highest singles ranking being No. 1170 and her highest doubles being No. 987. She has won a $10,000 tournament in doubles in Italy, and also reached the quarterfinals of the competition in singles.
