'Dogs trail following late-game surge

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.- The No. 20 Fresno State softball team (10-1) faced its first deficit of the season on Friday afternoon, after falling 3-2 against No. 12 Oklahoma during its opening game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams.
The Bulldogs were off to an early 1-0 start after sending six batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. Fresno State drew three consecutive walks, scored on a wild pitch and forced an OU pitching change prior to facing their first out of the game.
Oklahoma tied it up (1-1) on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first meanwhile senior ace Jill Compton drew her sixth start of the season in the circle for Fresno State. Compton closed out the first two innings on strikeouts and added three to her 32 combined strikeouts on the year.
Freshman Dominique Jackson (2-for-3) collected the 'Dogs first hit of the game as the second-inning leadoff in the seven spot. Junior Kierra Willis (1-for-2) gave Fresno State its second hit on a line drive back up the middle during the third inning, after drawing one of the three walks in the first.
The Bulldogs defensive effort (1.000) was highlighted with the seventh double play of the season as Compton and Rivers earned the assist and junior Lindsey Willmon was awarded the putout at first base.
Following three scoreless innings, the Sooners took a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth after scoring on an RBI single and reaching safely during a caught-stealing putout at second base.
In what was the Bulldogs last ups, Jackson crushed her second home run of her rookie season with one out in the top of the seventh. Fellow freshman Victoria Trevino reached base on four balls with two outs in what was her second appearance as a pinch hitter this year. Friday's action was halted on a hard-hit line drive snagged by Sooner pitcher Jayden Chestnut (1-0).
The Bulldogs move to 10-1 on the season while Oklahoma advanced to 9-4 overall and 2-2 on the weekend.

Fresno State will return to Big League Dreams for day two with a doubleheader against Northwestern (12:30 p.m.) and No. 7 Oregon (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday. The three-day weekend slate will continue Sunday as the Bulldogs face Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge before heading home.
