`Dogs gut out 57-52 win at UNLV

LAS VEGAS - Behind a 7-1 run during final one minute and 11 seconds, Fresno State pulled out a 57-52 victory versus UNLV on Saturday at Cox Pavalion. The Bulldogs had a balanced offensive attack that saw four players post doubles figures for the seventh time a game this season, while the Lady Rebels had just one.
Fresno State (13-8, 9-1 MW) was led by senior guard Alex Furr, who hit four 3-pointers for the second straight game, as she recorded 14 points. Shauqunna Collins score 12 points off the bench. Toni Smith chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds while Bego Faz Davalos added 10 points and eight boards. UNLV's Dakota Gonzalez led all scorers with 18 points to go with seven rebounds.
Key to Fresno State's win was its defense in the second and fourth quarters in which the Bulldogs held the Lady Rebels (13-9, 6-5 MW) to a combined 5-of-28 from the field.
After trailing by six after the opening quarter, scoring just 13 points, the Bulldogs' ratcheted up the defense in second 10 minutes of the first half as they held the Lady Rebels to just 2-of-15 shooting. With a bucket by Gonzalez at the 8:40 mark, they did not hit a shot until there was 1:34 left on the clock as Fresno State went on a 12-4 run to grab a 25-23 lead.
With the score knotted up at 25-25, Furr knocked down a pair of the 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds to give the 'Dogs a 31-25 lead heading into the break.
UNLV regained the lead in the opening two minutes of the second half as they went on a 9-0 run to take a 34-31 advantage.
A minute after a 3 from Gonzalez pushed the Lady Rebels' lead to four, Collins stepped up and answered to bring the score to 39-38 with 2:33 on the clock. The senior then tied it up at 40 on a jumper with under a minute remaining in the quarter.
With UNLV nursing a 43-40 lead with 8:16 remaining, Furr tied the game with her third three of the game. A minute later, the senior drained another trey to give the 'Dogs a 48-45 edge. Collins then forced the Lady Rebels to call a timeout a minute later as she knocked down a jumper from inside three-point line.
UNLV though went on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes to regain the lead. Trailing by one, Smith grabbed an offensive rebound that led to Faz Davalos giving the Bulldogs a 52-51 edge.
With under a minute remaining, Collins knocked down 3-of-4 free throws to extend Fresno State's lead to four. On her second of the second pair from free throw line, she missed the attempt but Faz Davalos came up with the rebound. The Bulldogs got the ball into Furr's hands and the senior sank both attempts to put the game out of reach.
Fresno State continues its two-game road swing on Feb. 10 at San Diego State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PT and will stream live on the Mountain West Network.
