FRESNO, Calif.- After a storm terminated Friday's action, the No.22/24 Fresno State softball team took on Weber State and No. 7/8 Washington on Saturday at Margie Wright Diamond. The Bulldogs are 15-6-1 heading into the third and final day of the Fresno State Classic.
The `Dogs topped the Wildcats, 2-0 during their first game of the weekend stretch and fell 12-3 to Washington in Saturday's finale. Weber State (12-8) was coming off a 5-4 final decision over Cal State Bakersfield, meanwhile the Huskies (18-3) had run ruled San Diego State 8-0 earlier in the day.
Fresno State escaped the top of the first inning on its 12th double play of the season as senior Hannah Harris earned her sixth start of the year. Harris kept the `Dogs untouched through seven complete innings and became the pitcher of record versus the Wildcats with a 3-3 mark on the season.
Junior Lindsey Willmon scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning after reaching on a walk and placing the Bulldogs on the board due to a Wildcat throwing error. Willmon collected Fresno State's lone hit of the game with a leadoff double down the right field line in the middle of the fourth.
Following Willmon's extra base hit, Bulldog catcher Paige Gumz and pinch hitter Claire Stucker drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Shortstop Whitney Smith tallied her fifth RBI of the season on a bases-loaded walk to put Fresno State up 2-0.
Additionally, junior Kierra Willis tied her season game-high in walks after drawing her second in the third inning versus the Wildcats. The leftfielder paces the squad with 15 walks on the year.
Fresno State faced seventh-ranked Washington in the final contest and trailed by only two runs through six innings on Saturday. UW outscored the Bulldogs 12-3 after collecting five runs in the first and adding six during their final at-bats.
Senior Taylor Langdon (1-0) drew her third start and allowed four hits prior to freshman Kamalani Dung making her fourth appearance on the rubber this season. Dung went the distance of seven innings versus the Huskies and had a season game-high four strikeouts.
Fresno State cut its deficit by one run in the bottom of the first as senior Bria Kennedy reached on an error, advanced to second due to an illegal pitch and scored on a double by Willis. The `Dogs remaining two runs were generated by Gumz's second home run of the season in the middle of the second inning.
Washington was held to five runs, versus Fresno State's three, through five innings before adding one in the sixth and capping the game with six runs on three hits. Dung suffered the first loss of her rookie season and is now 2-1 following her first complete game.
Overall on Saturday, four Bulldogs batted .400 or better including Vanessa Hernandez (2-for-2), Willis (3-for-5), Gumz (2-for-4) and Willmon (2-for-5). From the rubber, Harris allowed no runs over seven innings with a team high five strikeouts and just one walk versus Weber State.
