Mayar Sherif Ahmed named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State's Mayar Sherif Ahmed was named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The honor is the second of the sophomore's career.

Ahmed helped lead Fresno State an undefeated 2-0 week, including a victory over No. 40 Washington State (4-3). The Bulldogs also beat Saint Mary's (6-1).

Competing at the No. 1 singles position, she earned two straight-set victories, defeating the Cougars' Maria Biryukova 6-2, 6-2 and Saint Mary's Aniek Van Rossum 6-3, 6-2.

Partnering with her sister Rana, the two defeated Washington State's No. 1 doubles squad Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht, 6-0, helping the Bulldogs earn the doubles point. The duo also held a 5-2 lead over Saint Mary's 60th-ranked doubles team but the match did not finish because Fresno State earned the doubles point with victories on courts 2 and 3.
