FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State (19-10, 15-3 MW) maintained control in their Friday night game against Utah State at the Save Mart Center on Senior Night as the Bulldogs won 66-62. The Bulldogs were lead by a balanced offense with four players scoring in double figures for the 10th time this season.
"Anytime the season ends, it's nice to end it on a win and in second place. I feel really good about our season. If you remember the preseason it wasn't very good but we were improving each game playing really good teams. I feel really good about how far we've come and how much we've learned." Fresno State Head Coach Jaime White said. "I'm excited for the tournament!"
The Bulldogs had a 6-0 lead out of the gate with back-to-back 3-pointers from senior Alex Furr to start the game. Fresno State shot above 50 percent from the field for three of the four quarters, with four players scoring in double digits. Furr led the Bulldogs with 15 points as she went 4-of-5 from the 3-point line. Moriah Faulk, Bego Faz Davalos, and Toni Smith all added 12 points each. Smith grabbed a team high of five rebounds and Collins passed her career high of steals with six on the night.
The Aggies were lead by Katie Toole with 21 points. Deja Mason totaled game-high seven rebounds. Strong shooting from Utah State kept the game close through out the night, including Funda Nakkasoglu hit a buzzer beating 3-pointer to tie the contest at 35-35 going into halftime.
Fresno State went on a 13-4 run at the beginning of the second half to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night 50-39 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. Faulk started the Bulldogs' key run with a jumper off an assist from Furr. Furr then knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the night after a Faulk steal on the other end of the court.
Utah State went on an 11-4 run late in the fourth quarter to pull the Aggies within one at 63-62 with 1:39 left in game play. Two Utah State fouls in last 40 seconds gave senior co-captains Furr and Smith the opportunity to close out the game as they made 3-of-4 free throws.
"I think we're very calm about the tournament," Smith said. "We have a lot veterans on this team and we know how it feels to be in the tournament. I feel like we're going to go in there very confident and ready to play."
Fresno State will enter the Mountain West conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. They'll play their first game at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. at 6p.m. PT. The Bulldogs will face the winner of the No. 7 Utah State and No.11 Nevada game.
